Once a Gambler, Now a Clean the World Director

Once a Gambler, Now a Clean the World Director
Bob McAbee was certainly going nowhere just over a year ago. With drinking and gambling issues, he turned to faith to guide him into a better path for himself. At 58, McAbee found that he had a greater calling, and it involved the go green movement. McAbee is now the Las Vegas facility director for Clean the World, a nonprofit organization that recycles discard hotel soaps and distributes to homeless shelters and countries with high death rates that are the cause of diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. The organization started in Orlando, Fla, in 2008 and has a national network of 1,200 hotels that donate shampoos, conditions, lotions and discarded soaps that are left behind by guests. Wynn Resorts Ltd, The Venetian and Palazzo and Caesars Entertainment Corp have joined the movement in Las Vegas. With $250,000 in donates from Harrah’s Foundation, Clean the World opened a processing facility to sort all of the soaps and shampoos. Clean the World estimates that it has delivered most than 9 million pounds of bar soap all over the world. The facility handles products from 400 hotels on the West Coast and processes about 10,00 ponds of soap products daily, five days a week. Many local resorts on the Strip with green initiatives have donated to Clean the World. Caesars Entertainment has donated 62,00 ponds of soap and 44,000 pounds of bottled amenities in just more than a year. As guests in hotels simply leave behind these soaps, they are usually thrown away, headed off to a landfill. Guests simply don’t realize all of the amenities that are available to them that are not available in many countries. Clean the World’s mission is devoted to saving lives through saving soap. The organization aims to help all types of people in needy areas, including children in impoverishes countries or the homeless population in Las Vegas, which used to be McAbee. He started out as a volunteer in May and was offered a full-time position in September 2011. Two to four other volunteers help in the facility but new employers are needed as the operation expands. In 2012, the facility plans to employ 30 more people. The organization definitely helps others get on their feet, and McAbee suggests that it will continue to do so. Organizations like Clean the World are necessary for a brighter future, particularly in less than desirable economic times. Programs like Clean the World’s soap collection are helping to create a better life for people all over the world.
