Best Preserved Nodosaur Fossil Accidently Found

[INCREDIBLE]

This amazing dinosaur fossil was discovered in March 2011 by Suncor miners working at the Millennium Mine north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. They came across transmogrified marine plant remains and a dinosaur fossil of a creature that lived and died over 110 million years ago. The creature was identified as a new species and genus of nodosaur, similar to an ankylosaur. Nodosaurs did not have tail clubs like ankylosaurs, but they did have a set of thorny armor to scare away predators. This nodosaur in particular had two 20-inch long spikes on its shoulders for extra protection. The newly discovered herbivore was 18 feet in length and weighed also 3,000 pounds when it was alive.

This fossil is considered the best preserved nodosaur ever discovered. According to researchers at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, usually only dinosaur bones and teeth are found, but in this case the nodosaur’s big armor plates and skin were also remarkably well-preserved. Paleontologists believe that this level of fossilization occurred because of a rapid undersea burial. The nodosaur fossil is being kept at the Royal Tyyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta. Be sure to watch the video to take a look at this amazing discovery.
