For what seemed to be an ordinary day at the Leopard Creek Golf Course in Malelane, South Africa, turned out to be a day of combat between two of the world’s deadliest snakes, also known as black mambas. In the middle of a game, a golfer spotted the two snakes intertwined, engaging in battle. The sparring you see in the video is a battle over a female mate. As they’re intertwined, they’ll shove each other until one snake finally gives up. This behaviour is known as “plaiting combat”. Luckily, the golfer filming the snakes didn’t try to break up the fight because their bite can be lethal if not treated with an anti-venom.
According to the National Geographic, black mambas tend to avoid humans and have a shy and secretive demeanour. However, if threatened, they can become aggressive. Each bite of a black mamba injects potent neurotoxins into any human or prey. If its attacker refuses to back down, the black mamba will strike over and over again. As a rule of thumb, you should always keep your distance if you see a black mamba. You wouldn’t want to get yourself tangled up in combat with one of the world’s deadliest snakes.
