Information and the Internet: How to Separate Fact From Fiction

[KNOWLEDGE IS POWER]

Information and the Internet: How to Separate Fact From Fiction
The Internet is undoubtedly the means of communication that transmits more information today than whatever has been transmitted in the past thousand years through any other mean that mankind has created ever. Its cost, its effectivity and its reach is what has made it the king of any form of communication ever and it is because of the same reason that it’s so hard to find a piece of legitimate information that has been proven to be truthful. How can we trust something that anybody could have modified? That’s why, when we stumble upon pages that we can trust, it almost feels like stepping on an oasis in the desert.

One such page that many people thought to be truthful and rely on today is WebMD, that greets you with “Better information. Better health.” which proves to be a quite powerful slogan within its four word length. This makes the case a bit sadder due to the fact that WebMD has cited a rather non-trustworthy resource. EWG, Environmental Working Group that is, with a revenue of 7,348,936 in 2013 and a reputation of misleading and propagating misinformation amongst the public; is apparently now a reliable source for this powerhouse health site.
It’s really sad to see people gullibly fall for ideas that sound trendy before ideas that are actually backed by scientific research and credible information. Don’t get me wrong! I have nothing against organic foods (except the price), but it’s just as harmful as conventionally grown foods sometimes, as organic foods could have pathogens that hide easier in veggies and fruits that haven’t been protected by pesticides. Speaking of which, you shouldn't be so afraid of these chemicals as you’d have to ingest A LOT of foods and produce laced with pesticides and non organic fertilizers to be affected by its effects.
It's in our power
It’s not fair that companies and organizations like EWG can simply show their highly criticized “scientific research” for the naive, unknowing crowd to swallow down, as it is unfair for corporations such as WebMD to divulge information with illegitimate truths. We sometimes rely too heavily on the internet for tasks that could be fairly mundane or incredibly important and we don’t always know better than to go to the first source we believe is genuine.
It’s your money, it’s your health and ultimately it’s your life what you’re trying to protect here and you shouldn’t be bullied into believing that one way is better than the other just because someone says so; And as yourself, the public, you should never stick to one source forever. Always consult different opinions to make your own educated and personal opinion based on the evidence of real investigations. After all this is just an opinion and all I’m trying is to give you my perspective of something that concerns me and could concern you too, since you’re reading this. And as conclusion I will cite a powerful quote belonging to one of America’s best president.
“Never trust something you read on the internet”- Abraham Lincoln, 2012.
