Over 7,000 Explosive Gas Bubbles Discovered in Siberia

[INTERESTING]

This video shows the strange gas bubbles that have begun to pop up all over Sibera’s Yamal and Gydan peninsulas. Scientists came across these pockets of land that felt like jelly as they stepped foot on them. With further research using satellite imagery and ground-based surveys, they found over 7,000 of these bulging bubbles in the area. These bubbles are filled with mostly methane that has been warmed up enough to be released from its frozen state. Unfortunately, these bubbles pose a dangerous threat to people and the planet.

Over time these bubbles are said to explode and create craters and sinkholes on the Earth’s surface. All over the Siberian landscape there are many craters that have popped up. In 2014, one of the largest craters was discovered, with a hole measuring 260 feet wide. Scientists will be studying the phenomena further to better understand the negative effects of melting permafrost and the release of methane. They are currently working on mapping out the gas bubbles and trying to determine which ones pose the highest risk of explosion.

The formation of these gas bubbles is being linked to rising global temperatures and climate change. This gives us some food for thought on how the landscape is being negatively affected by the ongoing harmful actions of humans towards the environment.
