about their next source of wood for their watches. WoodMafia is now finalizing arrangements with the officials from Sweden. The deal considers taking down the oldest tree, known in the world. This is the “Old Tjikko”. It is a Spruce Tree which has been living for 9,550 years.
Scientists consider that this Sweden tree first took root at the end of the last Ice Age.
The visible parts of this 13-foot-tall (4 meters in height) plant actually is not ancient but the root system is. It has been growing for 9,550 years, according to the research team. Leif Kullman, a professor at Umeå University's department of ecology and environmental science was the leader of this team of scientists.
The researchers found this incredible tree at an altitude of 2,985 feet or 910 meters in Dalarna Province of Sweden.
According to Kullman, the tree's amazing longevity is mostly due to its ability to clone itself. Actually, the spruce's stems or trunks have life duration of about 600 years. When the stem dies, a new one appears from the same root stock. This is the way the tree survives through centuries and even millenniums.
WoodMafia will use the wood for the productions of 500 custom watches. Each of them will be a one-of-a-kind wooden watch. They all will be made with premium quality Swiss Watch Movements. In order the company to follow its environment-first philosophy, 100 trees will be planted for every watch sold. This equals to 50,000 freshly planted trees after all of the watches from this collections are sold.
A spokesperson explains the company’s environmental attitude in this way: “We started with a goal of planting 1,500 trees within our first year, but we smashed this goal with over 10,000 trees planted in our first year. We are now making plans to plant over 100,000 trees in the next 18-24 months.”
