Although animals are not worse than people and are even often nicer, many human beings treat them in a cruel way or just ignore them. Deciding to help animals in a crisis can become even more difficult when you are also in a stressing and dangerous situation.

Renata Žilić, from Croatia is a great example how people could stay humans in such a situation. Massive floods recently struck Gunja, Croatia and created a real chaos. Thelocal residents had to evacuate themselves urgently.Many of them left their pets behind. In the wake of the disaster, Renata and some other volunteers took action to save all the pets that were left behind.

They totally ignored the danger and the fact that the conditions were still not safe for people. Despite the dangers, they worked for hours until they took animals to safety.

The horrible weather was not the only problem for the volunteers. As it could be expected in such cases, not all of the animals were brave enough and ready to leave their homes. Trying to move to safety these scared and shy animals was a really challenging task. But this did not scare the volunteers and actually made them more creative.

And just because some of the pets were not ready to walk or being carried out of their comfortable homes, Renata came up with a great idea. She decided that a scared Golden retriever pup would not mind to be rolled out in a bin and will feel safe there.

Saving Yourself or Saving the Others?

The fact that Renata and the other volunteers risked their lives and health to help the animalsis quite inspiring and human. They also did their best to find a way to soothe the animals and take them to safety without using force and stressing them more. Building trust is especially important when trying to help someone, including animals.

Is Saving Animals Really Important?

Many people think that animals are completely different from us and less significant. But many others consider that pets are really like members of the family. Such people would try to save them just like they would do with their parents, siblings, etc. And, just like in the case with Renata, some people would risk their lives for trying to save someone else’s pet.

We kind of know better the other type of behavior – the cruelty against animals. There are so many cases of people keeping animals in terrible conditions. Also, we all know or suspect the horrible truth about the lives of factory farm animals. That is why it is simply great to hear and see people who care about animals just as much as they care about themselves. Nothing brings back the faith in humanity as much as  ordinary people who take some time and make serious efforts to help an animal in trouble. Such people do not seek for a reward but definitely deserve it.
