This video is another piece of evidence that, yet again, proves how smart and cunning ravens can be. Even though there’s a rock placed on the garbage bin lid, the raven is persistent to open it. The trash can is locked by the two side handles, but the raven manages to use its beak and body weight to unlatch the handle and open the lid. Once one of the handles is down, the raven has no problem taking off the lid to scavenge through the bin.
This raven was filmed in Haines, Alaska on one of the Szymanski family’s garbage cans. The raven surprised the Szymanskis family, who thought their garbage bins were being opened by foraging bears. The bird was able to open the bin quickly, which suggests that the raven has become accustomed to opening this type of container. With this in mind, the Syzmanskis will need to find a way to make their trash bins raven-proof. Like crows, ravens are a clever species of bird. According to the video, their brains are the size of a walnut, but some studies have found that their intellectual capacity is comparable to chimpanzees.
