Project kits are a great way to incorporate green living and environmental issues into a homeschool curriculum. One kit that we found stood out from the rest. This kit offers kids the chance to learn about weather patterns, temperature, wind, rain and to discover key points about global warming. Here’s an idea for an all-inclusive lesson plan that uses the weather station as a global warming homeschool project.

Science

The science integration is easy. Each component of the weather station teaches kids about another aspect of environmental science. Cloud patterns and types of clouds can be discussed as part of the lesson along with the greatest lesson of all from this kit, global warming. If you have been looking for a way to teach your children about global warming and have not been able to fit the pieces together, then this is the kit for you.

Math

Our content staff had a lot of fun playing with this kit and figuring out activities that would work alongside the kit to bring a full homeschool lesson. One of the ideas was to use basic math problems to track the differences in temperature, rain and wind each day and record those changes in a log book. The other was to make a math based chart that would predict what the weather might be like if the same weather pattern occurred over a few days or a few weeks. Taking that information you can revisit the project in about a week and see if the predictions were correct. You can also have the children use math to judge the difference between their last findings and the current findings.

Reading and Writing

Incorporating a book that fits the child’s age group is a great way to incorporate and blend the lesson together. If the child is younger, a book like “Winston of Churchill: One Bear’s Battle Against Global Warming,” is a great choice. Global warming books are available for every age group and just a quick look online should bring up age appropriate books for your child. Use the book as a reading lesson and combine that lesson with what the children are learning through the weather station. Have the child or children write about their experiences with the weather station as an essay project. You could also assign daily journal entries that are checked for grammar and punctuation.

Spelling and Vocabulary

This one is super easy. Make a daily or weekly list of spelling words that match terms used with the weather station and global warming. Give a spelling test on the words and a vocabulary test to match the words to the proper definition.
