Green energy, also known as sustainable or renewable energy, is becoming a thing of the present and future. More and more homes and businesses are discovering the many ways they can go green. However it is often hard to know exactly what needs to be done, which is where green energy consultants come in. A green energy consultant must be knowledgeable about green energy, have customer service skills and be comfortable talking to others about what they know and how their home or business can be transformed into being green.
Where You Will Work
A variety of individuals and companies frequently hire green energy consultants. You may find yourself working for many different organizations including large corporations and small, private businesses. Anyone who wants to start using renewable energy in their business (along with residences) will use the services of a green energy consultant. To be a green energy consultant, you must be comfortable working for a variety of people rather than one company like many other professions. Because you will be working for so many different types of organizations, you must also be familiar with the types of energy each will use, including different laws and regulations.

If you want to be a green energy consultant, your knowledge of renewable and green energy is just as important as your educational experience. Corporations and organizations hiring the services of a green energy consultant wants to know they have been formally educated and trained on the subject. For this reason, it is preferred that you get at least a four-year college degree in a related study. Try to find a college or university that offers courses in renewably energy, green energy and similar subjects. It is also helpful to have a degree in engineering or another energy-related science. Your four-year degree can either be from a local college or university, or an accredited online school.
Additional Requirements
Aside from your formal education and degree, there are other requirements you should have if you want to become a green energy consultant. For starters, as a consultant you will need to be very comfortable speaking to others and speaking in front of large groups of people. Most of your job requires verbal and written communication skills and excellent oral presentation skills. You should of course be very knowledgeable in green and renewable energy and preferably have previous and satisfied clients as reference.
Work Experience
Lastly, it helps to have some kind of experience in the field of green energy when you begin consulting. It can be difficult to get your first few clients with no work experience.
