Patio Gardening for Self-Reliance

A concept that is being talked about across the internet currently, is the concept of patio gardening and self-reliance. Unfortunately, when emergency preparedness, preppers and the concept of self-reliance is brought up in conversation many individuals still have the idea of stockpiling food and avoiding grocery stores. The truth is that patio gardening for self-reliance can be utilized in several different ways to help not only individuals who want to be completely self-reliant but also individuals who want to avoid certain health risks or who prefer food they can trust. In regards to patio gardening for self-reliance, here are a few ways that patio gardening can help me a self-reliance goal.

Preserving Food for Emergency Preparedness

Patio gardening for self-reliance also plays greatly into self-reliance during emergency situations. For individuals with patio garden, producing 2 to 3 times the amount of food that is available for purchase in the stores is a reality. Preserving this type of food and putting it up for emergency preparedness is one way of becoming self-reliant. In case of an emergency, individuals with canned or preserved food will be able to cook their food on an open fire, fire pit or on a grill. The need for electricity or the possible loss of food that has been preserved in the freezer is not a concern for individuals who utilize preserving food for emergency preparedness.

Self-Reliance and Organic Food

With food recalls on the rise, individuals who utilize patio gardening for self-reliance will find their fruit and vegetable bills to not only decrease but the chance of contamination of organic food to decrease as well. Individuals who plant in the patio garden environment know exactly what chemicals are used on their foods, what soil treatments, and how it is harvested. This allows individuals to not only be self-reliant in the forms of fruits and vegetables but also to have true organic food rather than food that is simply labeled organic and may not be.

Sustainable Food Supply

Individuals who utilize patio gardening will find that they have created a sustainable food supply. With the right choices of fruits and vegetables individuals can continue to grow plants without the need of buying new seed every time a plant dies. Seeds can be harvested from tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and various fruits and vegetables. By creating a patio garden, individuals can also create a sustainable food supply that will continue to yield food as long as the garden is maintained.
