Recycling in the Kitchen

Recycling in the Kitchen

Recycling in the Kitchen

Recycling has always been a part of a green lifestyle. For some individuals the thought of recycling in the kitchen means reusing kitchen scraps in compost piles and using green and eco-friendly products for cleaning. There are other ways to recycle in the kitchen. Here are a few ways that you can use in your own kitchen.

Recycle Mesh Food Bags

Mesh food bags are used for onions, potatoes and other root vegetables. These five and ten pound bags are thrown away daily by houses across the country. These bags can be reused in a number of ways. One of the ways is as a replacement for steel wool pot and dish scrubbers. They can also be reused as hanging bird suet feeders and wet/dry bags for beach and lake visits. Another idea that others have used is to use the mesh bags as attachments for Swiffer sweepers to clean hard to remove stains from floors without scratching the tile.

Recycle Peach Pits

Peach pits are a highly versatile part of the fruit. They can be reused for a number of things. One of the most common recycling methods used by green lifestylers is to reuse the pits in hygiene as a way to scrub dead skin cells and dry skin from feet and heels. Peach pits can also be ground in spice grinders and used as part of homemade beauty products, scrubs and lotions. There are even face scrubs that use peach pits as a way to scrub away dead cells.

Coffee Grounds

Some people may think the only place to use old coffee grounds is in compost piles. There are other ways coffee grounds can be used. Several hygiene and homemade beauty products use old coffee grounds as a coffee based body scrub. Coffee grounds can also be used directly in hanging and potted plants to enrich the soil from the top down.

Cereal Bags

Have you ever noticed the bags on the side of cereal boxes? Have you noticed that the bags are a heavy duty plastic? This type of plastic insulates and protects cereal from going bad too soon. You will not be able to find that type of bag sold separately. With a hand held plastic bag sealer you can reuse those bags to seal leftovers, bread and other food products from bugs and the elements. It is heavy duty, free and will keep food fresh twice as long.
