The Ohio State University was established in 1870, originally as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, until the name was changed in 1878. It is one of the largest public universities in the nation with a total enrollment of about 59,000 for the 2015-16 school year. The university’s main campus is located in Columbus, Ohio but off-campus classes and laboratories are other outlets for students, along with the use of online courses. The Ohio State University Buckeyes football team is a part of the Big Ten, and is a top tiered school for athletics in general. Their teams participate in the NCAA division 1, at a highly competitive level. The Ohio State University has been honored for their premier medical center, as well as their cancer research facility and hospital. The school works to develop cancer research and solutions, and invests millions of funds yearly, topping over $982.5 million for the 2013-2014 school year alone. While the medical field is a primary focus of the school, there are over 200 different undergraduate degree offered through 15 different colleges on campus. As for student life on campus, the university has over 1,000 different registered student groups on campus, including three student body governments, intramural recreational sports, social and academic clubs, and Greek life chapters.
