The University of Utah is a public research university which was founded in 1850 under the original name of the University of Deseret. The university is the main university of the state of Utah and offers more than 100 different majors for undergraduates and 92 different programs for graduate students. The university is home to the only medical school in the state. The campus is set up within the Rocky Mountains, in the urban Salt Lake City area. It is the oldest university in the state of Utah. The University of Utah Utes have over 15 different collegiate sports teams. Sporting crimson and white, and backed by their trusty mascot Swoop the hawk, the Utes take on NCAA division I teams and the football team even competes in the Pacific 12 conference, and has made their way to many bowl games and championships. Overall, the university is home to over 30,000 students and has an 83 percent rate of admittance into the university. The university has been recognized for several different programs and school within the university, including the S.J. Quinney College of Law, College of Engineering, College of Education and David Eccles School of Business, as well as the school of medicine. The public university encourages integrity, academic honesty, and creative and religious freedom among students and faculty members.
