The University of Tennessee, located in Knoxville, is actually one of the oldest universities in the country. It was founded in 1794, under the name Blount College, before Tennessee was inducted as a state into the union. For a decade, the university had to close due to financial reasons, but then reopened in 1820 under the name East Tennessee College. By 1840, the name of the University was hanged again to East Tennessee University, due to the changes in the curriculum of the school. By 1879, the school finally settled on its current name of the University of Tennessee. The campus of the university holds roots of American history, and was even a site of a Civil War Battleground. The school is ranked as one of the top public universities in the nation, and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for all levels of degrees earned within the university. The University of Tennessee currently has a total enrollment of almost 28,000 students. The school offers over 300 different degrees within 11 different schools of study within the university. The University of Tennessee athletic teams, the Volunteers, compete at the NCAA division I level, within the SEC. The school has 190 SEC championship team titles and 23 NCAA championship titles since 1987.
